willy

Voice assistant · runs on your own server

Say it once. Willy finds the right machine.

Willy listens on your PC and your phone and thinks on a server you control. Ask for a file, a reminder, a call or a server check, and the device that can do it does it.

Free and open source. Your commands, files and devices stay on your own server.

What to expect: the voice call, chat, devices and your PC and server controls work. Apple does not allow the rest on iPhone: the always-listening “Hey Willy”, reading other apps’ notifications, the torch and screen control. A free Apple ID installs the app for 7 days, then you sign it again the same way. Calls from Willy do not ring the iPhone yet, because push notifications need a paid Apple developer account. This preview is new and has not been tested on many phones.

Already running Willy? Say “Hey Willy” near your PC, or hold the mic in the app. Add more devices any time from Set up on your dashboard.

One request, the right device

You don’t pick a device. Willy works out which one a request belongs to and tells you what happened.

On your PC

“Hey Willy, open VLC on screen two.”

  • Open and close apps, move windows between screens
  • Volume, brightness, per-app mute, screenshots
  • Find files, open them, send them to your phone
  • Git: status, pull, switch branch, commit and push
  • Wake word that works offline, trained on your voice

On your phone

“Call Mum.” “Set an alarm for 6.”

  • Calls, SMS and WhatsApp drafts (you tap Send)
  • Alarms, timers, reminders and a morning briefing call
  • Take a photo, open apps, start navigation
  • Ring your phone when you can’t find it
  • Push notifications when the app is asleep

On your server

“How is the server doing?”

  • CPU, memory and disk now, with history graphs
  • Sites and apps up or down, logs, restarts
  • OS updates, services, storage clean-up
  • Files and a terminal, behind a confirmation
  • Alerts on your phone and PC when something breaks

Also: a voice call screen on web and phone that pops up files, screenshots and the camera as you ask, and a dashboard that shows every device live.

And it keeps getting more useful

Switch these on from one Features page. Each one says what it needs, and none of them sends a message for you.

It remembers and it looks

“Remember my wife is Asha.” “What’s on my screen?”

  • Memory you can read and delete, in your language and voice
  • Ask about your PC screen, phone screen or camera
  • Search the web and news, and ask questions about your own PDFs
  • Backup AI models, so a rate limit never stops it

It works while you don’t

“Every morning at 8, brief me.”

  • Routines and if-this-then-that automations
  • Background jobs that tell you when they finish
  • Hand coding to Claude Code, Gemini CLI or Codex on your PC
  • Uptime alerts, scheduled backups, one-command deploys

It meets you where you are

“Message Willy on Telegram.”

  • Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack and Discord bots
  • Email inbox, Google Calendar and Gmail drafts
  • Home Assistant, and a real phone call to Willy
  • Click and type inside apps, with the risky buttons off-limits

Voice calls that sound like a person and know where you are. With an OpenAI key the call is realtime, like ChatGPT Voice: Willy answers in a fraction of a second, you can talk over it to interrupt, and it can sound like a friend, a manager or a coach, in your language. Real work (reminders, your PC, files) still goes through Willy’s own brain. Without that key the classic call is used. Willy talks in short, natural sentences, keeps listening so you can ask the next question straight away, and remembers earlier calls (each account keeps its own). On the phone and PC it tells your voice from music, traffic, wind or rain, so the radio or a passing lorry is never taken for a command, and the call adapts to a noisy room.

Running it for others? Per-account limits, a usage and cost page and error reports are built in.

Your server. Your devices. Your data.

You install the hub, so you decide who connects. Here is exactly what reaches truewilly.com, and how to stop it.

Your commands never leave your server

Commands, replies, files, reminders and API keys stay on the hub you installed. The apps talk to your hub, not to ours.

A key for every device

Each PC, phone and server gets its own key. Lose a phone and you remove that one device from the dashboard.

It asks before it changes things

Anything that deletes, installs, restarts or sends needs you to say yes first. Messages are drafted for you to send.

What we do see

If you sign in with Google, truewilly.com records your name and email. Hubs also check in once a day with their address, version, device counts, the name of the AI provider and counts of which features are used. Turn the check-in off with one setting; email sign-in never touches us.

Sign in your way

Use Google (nothing to set up), an email and password, or the private link the installer prints. Friends and family can each get their own private space on your hub.

Questions

Does it cost anything?

Willy is free. The AI runs on a key from the provider you choose, and Groq and Google Gemini both have free tiers that are enough for personal use. A server can be a machine you already own.

Which AI can I use?

Groq, Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenRouter, or any service with an OpenAI-compatible address, including models running on your own machine with Ollama. You pick it in the installer and can change it later in the dashboard. Talking to Willy by voice needs a Groq or OpenAI key for speech-to-text, which you can add next to a different main AI.

What does truewilly.com know about me?

Only what is listed under “What we do see” above: your name and email if you use Google sign-in, plus the daily check-in unless you turn it off. Never your commands, files, replies or keys.

I don’t use Google. Can I still sign in?

Yes. Create an account with an email and password on your own hub, or use the private link the installer prints. Neither involves truewilly.com.

Do I need a domain name?

No. Without one, the apps connect to your server’s IP address over your network. A domain gives you HTTPS and lets you reach Willy from anywhere, and the installer sets that up if you give it one.

Can I run it without a server?

Willy needs a hub to connect your devices. It can run on the same Windows PC you use, but a small always-on Linux machine is the best fit because reminders and alerts keep working when your PC sleeps.

Does a voice call listen to my surroundings?

Only while a call is open and you haven’t muted it. The phone and the PC check the last second of sound on the device itself with Google’s YAMNet model, to tell a voice from music, traffic or wind. That check is never recorded or sent anywhere. Your words go to your hub only when you speak, and each account’s call history is kept separately and can be cleared from the Features page.

Is there an iPhone app?

There is a preview. It runs the voice call, chat and the controls for your PC and server, but not Android-only things such as the always-on “Hey Willy” or reading notifications, because Apple does not allow them. It is not on the App Store yet, so you install it from a computer with a free Apple ID (steps above); the dashboard and the voice call page also work in any browser, including on iPhone.

What does the realtime voice call cost?

It uses your own OpenAI key, billed by OpenAI per minute of talking and kept on your hub, never on the phone. Calls are capped (minutes per call and per month, and they end after a few minutes of silence) and Willy keeps only the recent minutes of the call in mind, so a long call does not keep getting more expensive. You can lower the limits or choose a cheaper model on the Features page.

Will Willy send messages by itself?

No. It opens the message ready to go and you tap Send. Deleting files, installing updates, restarting services and similar changes also wait for your yes.

Why does Windows show “Windows protected your PC”?

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen flags newly released executables that don’t yet have global download volume. Willy PC is 100% open source and safe. To start it, click More info on the warning dialog and then click Run anyway.

What Python version is needed on the server?

Willy server requires Python 3.10 or newer for modern asyncio and type handling. On Ubuntu/Debian run sudo apt install python3 python3-pip. On Amazon Linux 2023 or RHEL run sudo dnf install -y python3.11 python3.11-pip.

How do I update it?

On the server run git pull && ./install. Your settings are kept. For the apps, download the newest version from the releases page.
